Events

Costuming

Without the generous support of the fan costuming community, AOD would not be what it is today. We are proud to host a number of Cosplay oriented events, including tournaments, fashion shows, design workshops, and photography tutorials.

Cosplay Cosmetology

With Captain Li Hellsing. Starting on Sun at Noon. In room Live Events 3. Also categorized as Panel.
Learn to level up your Cosplay skills by enhancing your own features with makeup, contact lenses, hair styling, and wigs. We also show off some costume design tricks.

Cosplay Photography at Conventions: What You Can Do to Make Friends & Strangers Look Awesome

With Elliot Trinidad. Starting on Sat at 11 am. In room Live Events 2. Also categorized as Panel.
In the age of image sharing, wearing a good costume is only half the battle: it ought to be well-documented too! Whether you're using a point-&-shoot on your con buddies, or a hefty DSLR for love of the medium, this panel shares insight unique to shooting at conventions that you won't find in a typical Photography 101. Some topics include hall photography vs. scheduled photography, making the most of limited convention spaces, photographer etiquette, and how to get your pics out into the world.

Fabric for Cosplay

With Bekalou. Starting on Sun at 11 am. In room Live Events 3. Also categorized as Panel.
Selecting fabrics for your costume can be overwhelming. Join our discussion on choosing fabrics and learn to make the most from your decision!

Hall Costuming Awards

With AOD Staff. Starting on Sun at 3:30 pm. In room Main Stage.

This year the Hall Cosplay Contest has two special prizes: Best Video Game Costume and the Acme Award for the best costume from or inspired by a western cartoon! The winners of each of these awards receive $100 cash!

To enter, make sure our cosplay staffers get your picture and contact information at the con. As usual, they are roaming the halls of the Hotel Kabuki, taking pictures and collecting some information from people wearing costumes around the convention. They are asking for your name, the character you are dressed as, and what the source is, and optionally you may give them your cell phone number or email (so we can contact winners).

  • Attendees may enter as many costumes as they are able to.
  • You must have a valid badge in order to enter.
  • If you do not give us a valid way to contact you, you forfeit your prize.
  • Costumes that win awards at the Masquerade are not eligible for Hall Costuming awards.
  • Cosplay Staff may not enter.

The winners are chosen by AOD Staff. Awards are given in the afternoon on Sunday. You must either be present or leave us a way to contact you to win; if not, then the next winner present or we have contact information for receives the award.

Masquerade

Starting on Sat at 7 pm. In room Main Stage.
Always a staple of AOD, costumers gather together to compete and show off their talents. Your favorite character, your own creation, or references to insane internet memes, we've seen it all compete on stage in the Masquerade costume contest, competing for the coveted "Best of Show" prize. This year's Best of Show receives $500, Runner-up Best of Show receives $250, and Best Construction/Best Presentation receive $125 each! All winning groups also receive trophies.
